PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Machine vision, a key player in the automotive industry

The Institute for Research in Design and Manufacturing (IDF) is a research institute under the Universitat Politécnica de Valencia, which carries out research and development projects in the areas of design, manufacturing and automation focused on the automotive industry, combining the potential and competitiveness of the business association with the university environment strongly committed to research and development projects (R&D) to create an entity capable of undertaking wide-ranging activities.

In this sense, the Alava Group collaborates with the Institute for Research in Design and Manufacturing to create a system based on artificial vision techniques to improve the detection and monitoring of defects in car bodies, currently used by such renowned and competitive automotive manufacturers as Mercedes Benz in its Vitoria factory and Volkswagen in its Pamplona factory (both in Spain).

Date of execution:

2016-2017

Location:

Valencia, Spain.

How we made it happen

Inspection tunnel

Design and supply of an automated inspection system (inspection tunnel) for the correct and effective detection and monitoring of bodywork defects consisting of: a vision subsystem based on cameras capable of classifying and detecting defects thanks to a development with sophisticated algorithms; a Cartesian robot mechanical structure that supports the acquisition devices (the cameras) and moves the lighting elements; and a set of screens that serve as an interface for the operators where the defects are highlighted for manual repair.

Likewise, the image acquisition subsystem is composed of 32 high resolution BASLER CMOS digital cameras with an acquisition capacity of 20 images per second, assembled with high quality optics and variable focal length. Each camera images a part of the bodywork, with sufficient safety margins to ensure that no defects are missed on the bodywork. The cameras are fast enough to acquire images in the time available for in-line production. They are connected to acquisition cards running on a MATROX industrial PC.

The lighting subsystem uses high-frequency fluorescent tubes mounted on 11 arcs that move at constant speed over the bodywork. The Cartesian robot supports the cameras, which are fixed, while moving the structure of luminous arcs. Along with the supply and installation, the Alava Group also carried out consultancy work on the most suitable hardware architecture and supplied the equipment, both hardware (cameras, lenses, Industrial PC) and software (image processing libraries).
