PROJECT OBJECTIVE

The role of accelerometers in aircraft prototypes

The objective of this project is to provide the necessary vibration sensors for the different Flight Test Initiatives (FTI) of several aircraft prototypes, validating the structural designs and systems, as well as supporting their certification before the authorities.

Airbus Defence and Space organizes rounds of consultations to obtain characteristics of the accelerometers best suited to the requirements and casuistry of each test to be performed, ensuring that they were able to meet the needs they posed. All this must be achieved without compromising safety margins.

How we made it happen

ICP triaxial accelerometers

The solution offered by the Álava Group is the supply provided, since 2017, of 130 triaxial accelerometers with ICP technology for different flight tests carried out by Airbus. Thanks to the experience gained after years of collaboration between both companies, the engineering staff of Álava Ingenieros manages to define the ideal accelerometer according to the unique and challenging requirements of the flight tests, adapting it to each of the different demands.

These sensors, used to obtain data for subsequent analysis during certification campaigns, must be of the highest precision to ensure that the results received are correct. Accelerometers are used especially for vibration and flutter measurements, both in military and civil applications, monitoring several parameters to help understand aircraft behavior (high vibration, shock or aeroelasticity are some of these parameters).

For all applications, the accelerometer must provide accurate low-frequency and high-frequency measurements, or even reject it. It is also very important to consider the operating conditions of the sensor in very harsh flight test facilities, such as extreme temperatures, fuel or high voltage areas, as well as being exposed to water spray, mud splash, particle impact icing, and so on.

Therefore, each of the above-mentioned accelerometers has a fully hermetically sealed titanium housing with an overload limit of up to 5,000 g and an operating temperature range of -54°C to 85°C or, in some of them, even higher. In addition, they contain electrically insulated bases for results free of electrical noise.
