PROJECT OBJECTIVE
3D modeling of the human body
The NextMed project aimed to develop a 3D modeling system based on Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technology. This system would allow a deeper and simpler study of any part of the human body in order to make better diagnoses and help the doctor in his daily work, thus obtaining a significant increase in the quality of life of patients.
In addition, the international presence of the Álava group facilitated the expansion of the project results at an international level. Likewise, the experience of the consortium members in European R&D projects boosted the participation through the project results in other calls of the H2020 program.
The project is part of the R&D&I "Retos Colaboración" projects, which aim to support experimental development projects in cooperation between companies and research organizations, in order to promote the development of new technologies, the business application of new ideas and techniques, and contribute to the creation of new products and services. planned research in strategic areas of the future and with potential international projection.

Efficiency in patient care
Álava Ingenieros, as an expert company in industry 4.0 and leader of the project, was in charge of developing the environment of the solution together with the VISAUALMED research group of the University of Salamanca and a company associated with the same institution, to offer a solution focused on responding to the challenges that the medical sector has identified when diagnosing patients more effectively.
This project has made patient care safer and more reliable than ever before. Nurses and doctors use mobile technology to record a patient's medical history and check, for example, that the correct treatment is being given.
RESULTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Technology in the diagnosis of diseases
The NextMed project will bring a clear benefit to the medical sector, since the system will improve the diagnosis and study of various diseases. For example, it will be possible to display a 3D brain with all its tracts perfectly identified, providing the physician with a unique tool for the study of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
Similarly, in a case of a lung cancer patient, the system will help doctors to carry out a very thorough preoperative study, being able to visualize the patient's lung and cancerous tissue in 3D, and interact with these models thanks to the VR and AR tools that will be developed.
