The purpose is to make known the options offered by the current market in order to be able to adapt to the case of needing to monitor machinery with a large number of points, something that a priori seems difficult to justify economically.
When we talk about continuous monitoring, the most critical machinery we know comes to mind, the turbomachinery. In this case, we are going to leave aside this typology, in which the simple fact of having to trigger a machine in a matter of milliseconds can be crucial to avoid a catastrophic failure.
When faced with the challenge of monitoring machines with a large number of supports, we should ask ourselves which functions are essential and which functions are desirable for the system I want to implement.
Let's think of continuous process machines, with a large number of supports that can be monitored: paper machines, printers, lamination processes, transports, etc.
We can also think of cranes which, although it is a non-continuous process, also have a large number of points.
Obviously, before starting with the work of defining functions, I must have performed a criticality analysis and a failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), where I define which points are susceptible to monitoring, knowing the failures that may occur, what effects the failure may have and whether I can assume that risk or not.
In the previous point I have also defined which predictive techniques detect the failures of these machines: vibrations, temperature, oil analysis, etc.
For this type of machines we will consider two main variables, vibrations and temperature. With these parameters I can know the mechanical condition of the points that I "sensor", mainly bearings and, in some cases, gearboxes. These components will be found mainly in the drives and roller bearings.
