PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Treatment of 95% of Aguas de Aburrá

As a continuation of the Medellín river sanitation program initiated in 2000 with the start-up of the San Fernando wastewater treatment plant, the EPM Group's subsidiary, Aguas Nacionales/ Consorcio de Aguas de Aburrá, began this project that seeks to treat 95% of this water and for which the northern interceptor and the Bello wastewater treatment plant are being built.

This mega-project transports wastewater from the municipalities of Medellín and Bello to this plant where, by means of activated sludge, it receives secondary treatment before being discharged into the Medellín River. By reducing the river's organic load, the dissolved oxygen content will be raised to a minimum level of 5 mg/l, in compliance with the environmental authority's requirements.

How we made it happen

Monitoring and data processing

Continuous monitoring of 41 machine trains as well as the supply of portable vibration measurement equipment for measuring routes in less critical machinery.

Machinery monitored includes wastewater treatment system inlet pumps, aeration system blowers, primary and secondary sludge pumps, agitators, centrifugal thickening and dewatering pumps, and gas motor generators. Bearing and bearing temperatures are also monitored.

To ensure the protection of equipment and people, avoiding possible catastrophic failures in the most critical equipment; and to allow continuous and remote supervision of equipment operation, since some equipment is located outside the plant facilities.

The measured variables are sent to the plant's distributed control system for analysis by the operators, who, thanks to the diagnostic tool, hosted on an external server, can make reports and assessments taking into account the data history of past measurements. The system architecture includes a fiber optic ring network with remote access capabilities.
