PROJECT OBJECTIVE
Treatment of 95% of Aguas de Aburrá
As a continuation of the Medellín river sanitation program initiated in 2000 with the start-up of the San Fernando wastewater treatment plant, the EPM Group's subsidiary, Aguas Nacionales/ Consorcio de Aguas de Aburrá, began this project that seeks to treat 95% of this water and for which the northern interceptor and the Bello wastewater treatment plant are being built.
This mega-project transports wastewater from the municipalities of Medellín and Bello to this plant where, by means of activated sludge, it receives secondary treatment before being discharged into the Medellín River. By reducing the river's organic load, the dissolved oxygen content will be raised to a minimum level of 5 mg/l, in compliance with the environmental authority's requirements.
