PROJECT OBJECTIVE

New railway platform

This project consists of the construction of a new railway platform from the crossing under the C-31 highway to the T1 terminal at El Prat, Barcelona Airport.

Thus, the proposed route of both tracks is straighter than the previous one, connecting the two terminals by passing under the runways and ending its route under terminal T1, at the same point where Line 9 of the metro does. A large part of the 4.5 km of the proposed route runs through a 2.8 km tunnel, excavated with an EPB type tunnel boring machine. This train allows faster and more direct access from the center of Barcelona, with frequencies of approximately 15 minutes, instead of the 30 minutes of the previous line.

Action plan, services and instrumentation

This line will run from Paseo de Gracia (eventually to be replaced by La Sagrera station), Sants Station, El Prat de Llobregat and the new stations of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of the airport.

In this way, it will take advantage of the R2 line until after the Prat station, where the new railway platform will be built to connect with the airport, which will be mostly subway.

Grupo Álava provided the monitoring services during the works, including all the installation, instrumentation design, supply, measurements, data monitoring and presentation to the client through reports and a computer platform. In the specific situation of the tunnel boring machine passing through the runway of El Prat airport, continuous monitoring of different geotechnical parameters was proposed.

All the sensors were centralized in a datalogger that interrogated the sensors with the programmed cadence and sent the data for evaluation. The installation of the instruments was a critical task for the client as only three days were available to execute the installation work, coinciding with the maintenance work on the runway, since access to the area where the devices were installed was totally restricted.

The installation was a complete success as the work was completed in 18 hours, with minimal disruption to airport runway maintenance and service work. A system for continuous monitoring of geotechnical parameters was obtained in a place where access for measurement by classic topography would have been very complicated and insufficient.

RESULTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Infrastructure monitoring

The system installed made it possible to maintain the airport runway in perfect condition during the execution of the railway access tunnel. The result is the evolution of the deformation in the three cross sections and in the vertical one, being able to simulate the possible settling basin at the passage of the tunnel boring machine and to relate it to the local geotechnical parameters and the execution of the tunnel.

It has proved to be a reliable system to minimize the risk of affecting other infrastructures during the construction of the tunnel with an adequate installation time due to the restrictive access to the area. The data obtained by the monitoring system were checked by means of punctual measurements made with topography, so that the system's goodness could be verified.
