PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Early warning of volcanic activity

The purpose of the project was the installation and calibration of three seismic stations belonging to the National Volcanic Surveillance Seismic Network. Two of these stations were installed on the island of Tenerife, in the municipalities of Realejos and Granadilla, while the third one was installed in Campo de Calatrava.

These seismic stations have the function of early warning in case of volcanic activity. In addition, they are constantly contributing data to the National Seismic Network for the detection and localization of seismic activity throughout the national territory.

How we made it happen

Design. Installation. Configuration

Design of the electronics and housing, soundings, construction of the civil works, assembly of the electronics, installation, calibration of the sensors and configuration of the data acquisition and transmission system.

The installation consisted of these parts:

  • 3G-4G communication.
  • Powered by solar panels and battery.
  • Broadband (120s-100Hz) sounding sensor.
  • GPS time synchronization.
  • House to house the entire system including the sounding.

Once the entire system was designed, we moved on to the civil works phase, manufacture and configuration of the electronics, drilling, installation and calibration of the sensors. The supplied sensors were installed in posthole or borehole of reduced diameter and avoiding the use of anchors due to the high range of inclination that the sensor accepts in the installation.

This sensor is the Radian broadband seismograph from Güralp The installation was carried out in a 100 mm diameter borehole cased in PVC except for the last meter where the sensor torpedo is installed, in a diameter of 80 mm, and filled with sand crumb, thus ensuring perfect contact of the sensor with the rock.
